Yahoo! Sports: Signs of Hypocrisy

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Yahoo! Sports has a new writer named Michael Silver who recently made his debut with a fantastic preview of ‘Morning Rush’. In the article he covered (among many things) a hot topic in the sports world: Michael Vick and his alleged involvement (and funding) of breeding Pit Bulls to fight to the death. The NFL and the Atlanta Falcons quickly suspended Vick from training camp when the news first surfaced and rumours have it that Vick will soon be suspended completely from the 07/08 season. I’m not going to get into the details of why Vick’s suspension and treatment by the public/activist groups is hypocritical, instead I suggest you simply read the article.

Barry Bonds and #756

Friday, August 10th, 2007

It’s so sad that the most sacred record in American sports history was broken by a steroid pushing junkie. Say what you want, but his shoe size went from size 10 to 13. Your shoe size (and head size) doesn’t grow after the age of 30. Furthermore, those aren’t steroids: That’s growth hormones. MLB could have solved this problem a years ago (after the lockout) but for some reason they didn’t.

Now I know: It’s hard to hit a baseball out of the park, steroids don’t help you with your reaction time, hand/eye coordination etc.. I know that. But I’ve seen Barry Bonds hit home runs off of broken bats. YES, I said a broken bat home run and yes, you need serious strength to make that happen. I wonder if Hank Aaron could hit a broken bat home run?

There’s a good discussion going on at the Yahoo! Sports MLB Expert blog.

Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue the next day was great:

2007 Canadian Open @ Angus Glen

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Update (July 27/07): They were very strict on using a camera anywhere on the course. I managed to sneak a couple videos, here’s Mike Weir on the 1st hole taking his 2nd shot. It was great to have Mike Weir and Vijay Singh in the same pairing, but its too bad John Daly pulled out.

A friend is volunteering at the Canadian Open this year at Angus Glen and offered me a free day pass for Thursday/Friday. I can’t go Thursday, but Friday I’m going to head down from 11am to about 2pm. The likes of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson won’t be attending this year, but there’s still going to be some big names including Mike Weir, Vijay Singh, Mark Calcavecchia and more.

It must have been hard to get big names to commit to the Canadian Open, especially with the British Open just last week. Luckily the organizers pulled out all the stops and actually chartered a private jet to fly players from the British Open to Toronto.

A host of the top names in golf were shuttled by private jet from Scotland to Canada on Sunday night in order to compete in the Canadian Open which begins on Thursday. The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA), organisers of this week’s Canadian Open, chartered a luxury airplane to fly over 20 golfers and their guests to Toronto from Edinburgh immediately after the Open Championship ended.

I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures.

In our life time…

In our lifetime to have these 8 teams left in the quarters is something else..

World Cup Soccer on Thinkpad

Monday, June 26th, 2006

I’m not sure if its like this at all IBM locations, but here at the Toronto Software Lab, we have access to a live feed for the World Cup Soccer matches on our Thinkpads. I’m too busy to watch the games, but its good to have on in the background and jump back once and a while to see the score. Check out this great commercial from Adidas, its been airing throughout the World Cup. I wish I knew what song that was in the background.

Update: The making of that commercial:
